When I Started Performing: 1995
Performing Arts Background:
I have a performing arts background as a singer, songwriter, and recording artist. In 2009, I was signed to EMI Music, where I had the opportunity to work with notable producers and writers. I released my album across all streaming platforms and performed extensively in venues throughout Toronto and Chicago, sharing both original songs and covers. I've also lent my voice to corporate jingles, allowing me to explore different creative opportunities.
How did your performing arts background supercharge your entrepreneurship?
My performing arts background supercharged my entrepreneurial journey in several meaningful ways, providing me with unique skills that continue to shape how I lead, strategize, and grow BāKIT Box.
1. Resilience and Adaptability: The music industry is tough. I experienced so much rejection as well as judgement around my voice, my body, and my mind. The music industry helped me create a thick skin and the resilience necessary to thrive as an entrepreneur. It was my first brand building experience, so now I have a different perspective on how I accept feedback and criticism on my brand.
2. Creative Problem-Solving and Innovation: Songwriting and recording taught me to think creatively under pressure, a skill that translates directly into product development. Whether it’s designing culturally immersive activities or creating a standout pitch, my ability to innovate keeps BāKIT Box fresh and unique in the market. Crafting new songs was like creating new business strategies—always staying ahead, engaging the audience, and delivering something meaningful.
3. Performing Under Pressure: Performing on stage sharpened my ability to stay calm and focused, even when things don’t go as planned. Whether I’m pitching to investors, speaking at conferences, or presenting in high-stake environments like my recent grand prize win, I treat every opportunity as a live performance. I am trained in stage performance and have extensive experience with how to interact with an audience.
4. Branding and Storytelling Expertise: A music career isn’t just about the songs—it’s about building a brand that resonates with fans. I brought that mindset into BāKIT Box by developing a brand with a clear mission: introducing cultural diversity through food and play. Just like in music, storytelling is everything. I use my experience crafting narratives through lyrics to build authentic connections with customers and investors.
5. Collaboration and Networking: In the studio and on stage, I worked with producers, writers, and other artists, teaching me the importance of collaboration. That same mindset applies in my business, whether I’m building relationships with suppliers, managing a team, or partnering with educators and retailers.
6. Discipline and Work Ethic: Behind the glamour of performing is a relentless work ethic—practicing, refining, and preparing for every show. As an entrepreneur, that discipline translates into long hours, attention to detail, and the persistence needed to grow a business. My years of performing instilled in me the mindset that every effort counts, whether it’s rehearsing a song or refining a product offering.
Ultimately, my time in the performing arts didn’t just provide me with artistic expression; it equipped me with the resilience, creativity, and discipline necessary to build and scale BāKIT Box. Just as I once pursued musical success, I now channel that same passion and energy into driving my business forward.
