When I Started Performing: At the age of 3.
Performing Arts Background: When I was 3, I started piano. I loved music and performing. When I was 10, I was accepted into the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, focusing on Opera and Musical Theatre. When I got to HS, I continued on at the Conservatory while also serving as the Jazz Vocalist for my HS Jazz Band. During my freshman year at Stanford, I got signed to an independent label and had a song on the radio. Subsequently, I started my own record label and publishing company to support a songwriting portfolio that spanned the US and the UK.
How did your performing arts background supercharge your entrepreneurship?
Having a performing arts background has instilled in me not only creativity, but resourcefulness, grit, and resilience. The music industry is tough. You evolve to have thick skin, to hear NOs and move forward with hope, while also taking critical feedback and improving upon it. Before I got signed to my first record deal, I got a NO from Sony/Columbia. They said even though they liked me and they liked my voice, "America wasn't ready for an Asian artist." I was heartbroken. I cried that day. All day. But, the next day, I said to myself -- if they're not going to let me in the front door, I'm going through the side door. Being an independent artist has enabled me to learn to take the punches in stride, as well as the ability to leverage critical feedback and come out stronger and more determined to get the job done.
